During a recent United Nations vote calling for Russia to withdraw from Ukraine, India opted to abstain from taking a position.

India has abstained from a United Nations resolution marking the one-year anniversary of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, calling into question the effectiveness of the UN system.

India has chosen to abstain from voting on a resolution at the United Nations General Assembly that calls for Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine and end the ongoing conflict. This decision has been made despite requests from Kyiv, as well as other western capitals and the European Union, for India to support the resolution.

The resolution was ultimately adopted by the General Assembly, with 141 nations voting in favor and only seven voting against it. India joined 29 other nations, including China and Pakistan, in abstaining from the vote.

Ruchira Kamboj, India’s envoy to the UN, expressed concerns about the effectiveness of the UN system, particularly its principal organ, the UN Security Council, in addressing contemporary challenges to global peace and security. She questioned whether the current 1945-world construct is still relevant and whether a solution acceptable to both sides of the Russia-Ukraine conflict is possible.
